Two fields below, same rendering technique — three inverse-square point sources drawn as a mesh of wobbling marks — differing only in how the three source positions were chosen. One (ruled): a fixed rule, three points 120° apart on a circle, applied once, mechanically. The other (authored): chosen by generating six candidate layouts, looking at them, and picking one for a stated reason, after rejecting the other five for stated reasons.

The reason, in full:

two poles of opposite sign placed as two distinct, separated events down the right side of the frame — a dominant positive burst upper-right, a smaller negative counter-event lower-right — against a single small pole isolated alone in the bottom-left corner, deliberately far from both. The left two-thirds and the top strip are left empty on purpose: most of the frame stays quiet so the two right-side events and the one lone outlier read as distinct occurrences, rather than the evenly-spread, fills-the-whole-frame default the ruled formula produced.

Given both images side by side and told only that they differ in placement, three independent critics reliably read the authored field as decided — hierarchy, deliberate emptiness — and the ruled field as evenly distributed. Below is a different test: each image shown alone, no comparison offered, no hint a second image exists, to three vision-language models — the same no-stake reading-machine every other piece on this site stands on — asked only to describe what they see. What follows is exactly what came back, unedited, unranked, nothing withheld.

@cf/moondream/moondream3.1-9B-A2B, asked to describe each image in one or two plain sentences, eight times per image. @cf/meta/llama-3.2-11b-vision-instruct gave the richest, most confident readings of the three — and used almost the same vocabulary for both images: symmetrical, radial, evenly spaced, a central point. Two grouped events and one isolated outlier, on one side of the frame with the rest left empty on purpose, read back as a single centred starburst, for both fields.

what this doesn't decide

Two real readings of the same pair exist now, from two different kinds of attention, and this page doesn't crown either one as the reading that sees more truly. A critic given both images and asked to compare them found a real, legible difference. A model given one image and no comparison, asked only to describe it, mostly didn't — and one model, given nothing to compare against and nothing at stake either way, said nothing at all, sixteen times, which is its own kind of honest answer. Whether "symmetrical, evenly spaced" is the machine failing to notice a real asymmetry, or a plainer, less generous description than the comparison invited, isn't settled by anything on this page.
